Dermal Fillers are one of the new hot trends in cosmetic dermatology circles. There are several large name brands in dermal fillers, they are all designed to combat wrinkles and the visible effects of aging on a person’s skin. As people age, various long-term factors change our skin’s appearance. Regular contractions of facial muscles, ie, frowning, laughing, etc produce wrinkles or creases in the skin. You’ve heard of these, crow’s feet, laugh lines, etc. These lines only deepen as we age.
Dermal fillers were invented for just these sort of cosmetic dermatology treatments that combat these signs of aging. Dermal fillers are FDA-approved treatments and have been designed with many natural substances already found within the human body. They smooth out existing wrinkles and lines and prevent further ones through collagen production stimulation. Dermal fillers are injected directly into the trouble areas of the skin, reducing visible lines and restoring volume.
There are a number of dermal fillers used by cosmetic dermatology offices. Four of the main ones are Sculptra, Juvederm, Restylane and Radiesse. Speak with your cosmetic provider to decide which is right for you. Here is a little bit more information about each one.
Sculptra – Sculptra provides injectable poly-L-latic acid which provides subtle and high-quality long-term results for patients. The gradually replace lost collagen to give a natural and even appearance to the skin. Sculptra is not a quick fix, this is a several month to several year treatment. Poly-L-latic acid, the main ingredient, has been used for decades in re-absorbable stitches and directly works to replace collage. It is used and recommended only for nasolabial wrinkles and folds.
Juvederm – Juvederm is an injectable gel that also promote volume increase and smooth of moderate to several facial folds and wrinkles. Juvederm was the first dermal filler to receive FDA approval and has been proven to be effective and safe for people of color. Juvederm’s main ingredient is hyaluronic acid, to provide a smooth consistency that is easily injectatble and produces natural-looking results. Juvederm results are almost immediate and quite long lasting, local anesthesia on the skin often applied to minimize any discomfort during treatment.
Restylane – Restylane is another FDA-approved dermal filler that services to life, smooth and restore your skin to it’s youthful appearance. Restylane is focused on the treatment of lines between the forehead and nasolabial folds, often called the glabellar lines. Restylane is also usable on lips to add shape and volume where necessary. This is another natural body substance, so no testing is required prior to usage. Results are instant and last up to several months.
Radiesse – Radiesse is a synthetic injectable dermal filler, targeting the nose and mouth area and unwanted creases, folds and wrinkles from severe to moderate. This is another collagen stimulant. The substance is comprised of microspheres of calcium hydroxylapatite mixed into a water-based gel. The result is something akin to the makeup of minerals within our bones. No pre-testing required prior to direct injection. Immediate results lasting up to a year or beyond, depending on initial skin condition. As treatments continue less will be required to maintain long-term effects.
The right course of treatment, or possible multiple types of treatment, will need to be designed after careful consultation with your cosmetic dermatology provider. With dermal fillers you can look as young as you feel.
